Abstract
A deeper analysis of headline news about President Trump’s words and actions may reveal that Trump is acting according to a plan based on his core beliefs.
Trump’s victory to become the 147th U.S. president is a historical occurrence, not only from the U.S. history point of view but also from a global perspective. Trump lost his second term bid in 2020 and became a judicial target of his deeds (sex scandal, tax matter, and obstruction of justice cases) and his political behavior during his 145th presidency. He has been impeached twice by Congress (The first time, Dec. 18, 2019, on two charges, abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and the Senate acquitted him on February 5, 2020. and the second time, on Jan. 13, 2021, for incitement of insurrection, the Senate acquitted him on February 13th, 2021.) His comments and interference in election results, and his involvement and handling of the 2021 January 6th protest (Did Trump incite people to storm the Capitol building in Washington, DC?) were all controversial issues that may have cost him his second-term bid. Despite numerous lawsuits being filed against him, Trump vowed to come back to the White House and ran an amazing campaign, not only rallying the grassroots of the Republican party loyally behind him but also motivating many neo-conservatives in the nation to accept his campaign slogan, MAGA (Make America Great Again). Trump proudly won the 147th presidential election by popular and electoral college votes.
Trump’s victory has proven that he is a tough fighter, a learned, smart politician, a media genius in creating headlines to keep him in the limelight, a daring bluffer, and a shrewd negotiator to win deals. His 145th presidential term gave him four years to understand the great power of the U.S. president (that can impact the nation and the world), and he tried to exercise that in the unique Trump manner (acting on his instinct and desire and making quick responses, decisions, and remedies with his wits.). Trump has some strong (conservative) core beliefs; he adheres to them firmly and makes clear campaign promises based on them. Trump keeps his campaign promises (trade imbalance, immigration, government inefficiency and waste, etc.) and tries to deliver them. This is one of the strong reasons that his second-term bid could draw more supporters who felt that he could deliver more of his campaign promises if he had been given a second chance. Biden essentially failed miserably in foreign policy and accomplished little in domestic issues other than pushing his identity politics (DEI, etc.). Trump was able to double down on his MAGA slogan in his campaign and attack the Biden Administration (and China) for America’s problems and decline in prestige.
Now, Trump has been in the White House for over two months in his second term. He is delivering his campaign promises by using his presidential EO to reverse some of the previous Administration’s policies (border control and illegal immigrants, support of the Ukraine war, DEI policies, abortion, etc.). Trump has grabbed Americans’ attention by establishing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He wisely appointed Elon Musk, the richest man, as its chief executive with a broad mandate to discover and fix the U.S. government’s problems.) Trump, after his inauguration, has launched a no-barrier tariff war against U.S. trading partners, friends, or foes. These two measures alone will have a great impact on the American economy, which is extremely sensitive to inflation, interest rates, and investment returns. Trump is a smart businessman, sharp with perception and quick with decisions, but he is not an economist. Will Trump succeed with his MAGA promise? Will there be a ‘Trumponomics’ that can support MAGA and lead the U.S. and the world to prosperity? Many political and economic commentators express concerns about his tariff strategy. In this column, this author will attempt to analyze ‘Trumponomics.’ This author will try to make sense of Trump’s actions (appearing sporadic and reversible by Trump) and relate them together as an intended strategy. In this analysis, the following three questions are to be answered: (1) Does Trump have a plan, or is he acting randomly? (2) If he does, will this strategic plan work for MAGA and make it succeed? and (3) What will the world’s future be?
Trump’s first term gave the world the impression that he was an impulsive and unpredictable President, easily making decisions and reversing them after placing blame on his subordinates. (He did have some disagreeable subordinates whom he fired) But he was a fast learner, perhaps the fastest learner in the White House ever in U.S. history. Now, Trump is serving his second term after a four-year fierce campaign and serious political scrutiny. But he has not changed much in his manners (perhaps becoming more presidential in contrast to Biden). His love of media fights and creating headlines has not changed either, but he has made the White House press conference more interesting. Trump became more confident (Incidents like having an open meeting with Zelensky showed that he was firmly in command.). In this author’s opinion, Trump. He is a very smart person, has some strong beliefs, and possesses a brave, combative personality. He is taking his second term more seriously than his first term and is doing a good job so far. Here is a broad analysis. Trump is stepping into the White House second time, facing a nation that is in more than $36 trillion in debt and fast declining in influence on the world stage. Trump has a firm belief that the U.S. has been taken advantage of for too long by the world (US policies of squandering money in aiding other nations for no return, and ‘unfair’ trade practices letting most countries have surpluses in trade against the United States). Trump also believes that the U.S. government was controlled by the ‘deep state’ and the ‘military-industrial complex’ for too long, resulting in an inefficient, bloated, and wasteful government. Now he was elected as the 147th U.S. president with a strong MAGA mandate. What should and could Trump do? He will be anything but a lame-duck president in his second term.
